The award-winning 15th annual World Championship Cardboard Boat Races will be held July 28 at Sandy Beach on Greers Ferry Lake at Heber Springs. Volunteers are already at work building paper boats to enter in various competitions, according to the Heber Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, a sponsor of the event. Teams of one, two or more paddle their homemade cardboard boats along a 200-yard course in both adult and children divisions. In addition to prizes for the fastest boats, the best sinking performance receives the "Titanic" award. Other festive events at the beach include volleyball tournaments, tug-of-war, watermelon eating contest, treasure dig for children and more. The boat races, which start at 10 a.m., have been filmed for national television programs in recent years. The festival won the Community Tourism Development Henry Award at the 2001 Arkansas Governor's Conference on Tourism. On Friday night, July 27, country music fiddler Britton Currie will perform at Sandy Beach at 8 p.m. For more information, call the chamber office at 501-362-2444, or visit their website at: www.heber-springs.com. #### Source: "Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism"
